Rehoboam might have understood the proverb that says, “Without counsel plans fail, but with many counselors they succeed” (Proverbs 15:22, ESV). Nevertheless, he was a man who plunged headlong in prideful and reckless confidence. Four characteristics of the modern man—or the “Rehoboam type” -- they are: Counsel Shoppers, Prizers of Youthfulness, Prattling Know‑It‑Alls, and Self‑Reflecting Individualists. Men of ancient cultures respected old age, received “hard” counsel, and lived as men deeply rooted in a godly community. There is much we can learn from those ancient men who listened to other men and sought counsel from their elders.
